Beginning gently, finding confidence together
The first days in a new setting are tender ones — a time when children are learning the shape of a new space, the rhythm of new routines, and the warmth of new relationships. At Sewing Seeds, we honor this transition with three dedicated settling‑in sessions, designed to help your child ease into their new environment at a pace that feels safe, supported, and deeply respectful of who they are.
These sessions begin from your child’s first contracted day, following our term timetable. They are not tests of readiness or independence; they are invitations to feel held, welcomed, and understood.
A Soft Beginning
Every child arrives with their own story, their own pace, and their own way of stepping into new spaces. Our role is simply to meet them where they are. During settling‑in sessions, children are welcomed with no expectation to join in immediately. Some explore with curiosity from the moment they arrive; others prefer to watch quietly from the edges. Both ways are perfect.
The environment remains calm and predictable — familiar songs, warm lighting, natural materials, and slow, unhurried transitions. This helps children feel safe enough to begin forming their own relationship with the space.
Settling Routine
Day 1: Parents stay for the first 20 minutes. The child then remains for as long as they are happy and confident.
Day 2: Parents stay for 5 minutes. We then aim for a longer independent session, usually around 2 hours.
Day 3: Parents come in only to help take shoes off at the door, then say goodbye. We aim for the child to stay until nap time, after lunch.
Day 4: We aim for a smooth handover at the door and for the child to stay for the full 6‑hour session.

Session One: Arriving Together
On your child’s first day, you will arrive at your allocated, agreed time. We begin gently, with parents staying for the first 20 minutes. This shared moment allows your child to explore the space with you close by, helping them feel grounded and secure as they take in the sights, sounds, and rhythm of the room.
After these first minutes, I will gently suggest that it is time for you to step outside. Goodbyes are best kept short and sweet — a warm hug, a simple “I will be back soon,” and then a confident exit. Any hesitation can make your child unsure, and they are more likely to become upset. A clear, calm goodbye helps them feel safe and supported.
If your child cries when you leave, I will offer reassurance, comfort, and calm. I stay close to them, helping them settle into the space and begin to explore.
During this time, you are asked to wait nearby, remaining available should your child need you. I will provide regular updates so you feel fully comfortable with the process — letting you know how your child is doing, how they are settling, and how they are responding to the environment.
This time apart may be five minutes or two hours; every child is different, and we follow their cues. When I notice your child becoming anxious, beginning to look for you, or asking for you, I will call you back straight away.
These early moments help teach your child that this is their time — a space to play, explore, and grow while their parent goes to work — and that mummy or daddy will be back soon. This message, repeated gently and consistently, becomes the foundation of their confidence.
Sessions Two and Three: Building Confidence
The second and third settling‑in sessions follow a similar pattern, gradually strengthening your child’s sense of belonging. Each session is shaped by your child’s cues — their comfort, their curiosity, and their readiness to explore independently.
Some children move confidently into play; others take their time, watching quietly before joining in. Both ways are healthy and respected. We honor the child’s pace, never rushing, never pushing, always listening.
These early sessions also give your child time to build relationships with the adults who will care for them — including our assistant, who works closely within the setting’s routines and policies. These gentle introductions help your child feel secure when short periods of sole care naturally begin later on.
Learning the Home-Time Rhythm
When it is time for your child to be collected, I will bring them to the door ready to go home. This small, consistent routine helps children understand the rhythm of the day: when mummy or daddy comes back, play ends and home-time begins.
Children thrive on predictability. Knowing that their parent returns at the door — and that this marks the end of their play — helps them feel secure, confident, and in control of their experience. Over time, this becomes a familiar pattern they can trust, reinforcing the message we gently repeat throughout their settling journey: **mummy or daddy will be back soon.

Keeping Parents Comfortable and Confident
A child settles best when their parent feels settled too. Throughout these early sessions, my aim is to keep you fully comfortable with the routine — knowing exactly what to expect, how your child is doing, and when you may be needed.
Clear communication is at the heart of this. I will share regular updates during your child’s short time apart, letting you know how they are exploring, how they are feeling, and how they are responding to the environment. If your child needs you to return sooner, you will be notified straight away.
This gentle transparency helps ease any anxiety, creating a calm and confident beginning for both you and your child. As we often say: happy mum/dad, happy child — when you feel secure, your child feels it too.
Saying Goodbye
Saying Goodbye can be difficult for any parent especially at a new place or when your child is upset, this is why a quick, confident goodbye is an important part of helping your child settle. When parents hesitate, children often become unsure and more likely to feel upset. A warm hug, a simple “See you soon,” and a calm exit gives your child the clarity they need to begin their day with ease. It also shows that you trust me to support them once you leave. You can feel reassured that I will provide regular updates, stay closely attuned to their emotions, and call you back if your child needs you, ensuring they remain happy, secure, and never left to become distressed.
A Partnership Rooted in Trust
Settling in is as much for parents as it is for children. Setting visits prior to the child starting are a time to ask questions, share your child’s routines, and begin building the trusting relationship that sits at the heart of our setting. Your insights help us understand your child’s rhythms, comforts, sensitivities, and joys.
Together, we create a soft landing place — a space where your child can unfold at their own pace, held by warmth, patience, and attentive care.
A Gentle Beginning
Every child deserves a beginning that honors who they are. Our settling‑in sessions offer exactly that: a slow, thoughtful introduction to Sewing Seeds, where relationships grow naturally and children feel safe enough to explore, connect, and thrive.
Each child settles at their own rhythm. and if a child needs more time, we will communicate closely with you and adjust the routine — for example, beginning with shorter morning sessions and gradually extending until after lunch — to help them feel grounded, secure, and confident in the setting.
We are honored to share this beginning with you.
